Iberdrola acquires 3GW offshore wind project in Ireland

Global energy company Iberdrola has expanded its renewable footprint into Ireland, where it will acquire DP Energy’s 3GW offshore wind pipeline.

The acquired projects include the Inis Ealga wind farm in County Cork and the Clarus project in County Clare. Iberdrola will develop these sites and start work on the Shelmalere project, located on the east coast of Ireland.

It predicts that once these sites are fully operational, they will produce enough green energy to power 2.6 million Irish households.

Iberdrola plans to invest €100 million (£87.5m) in renewable projects in Ireland by 2025, in line with Ireland’s plan to have 5GW of offshore wind capacity operational by 2030.

The company is optimistic of its work in Ireland, predicting up to 40GW of potential offshore development opportunities to be available. Iberdrola’s global offshore wind pipeline currently exceeds 30GW, with projects in the UK, Germany, France, US, Japan and Sweden.
